About Joseph

I began Karate with JKF Goju Kai in Christchuch in 1983 at the age of 5.

I have studied with some of the best Karate instructors in the world, including my father Patrick McGregor Shihan and have had the honour of representing my club, region and country many times over the past 33 years.

Currently I hold Japan Karate Do Federation 4th Dan, National level Referee and am Chairman of the Central North Island Regional Board.

I feel very priviledged to hold these titles and feel a great responsibilty to pass on my knowledge to those willing to learn.

Karate Papamoa - Shi sei kan NZ

Opened in 2009, Karate Papamoa has become a major part of sport and recreation in our community.

The club had humble beginings starting with just 3 students to become the single largest Karate club in the Bay of Plenty and we are still growing.

Our members come not only from Papamoa but Te Puke, the Mount and Tauranga to attend classes that cater for all levels from Beginners right though to Elite international competitors, traditional Budo and modern sport Karate.

The lineage of our club is clear and very strong. We take enormous pride in our history and can trace our roots clearly back to Japan. Joseph Sensei has been graded through the Japan Karate-do Federation - the governing body for Karate in Japan. All of our junior instructors have been graded through our Honbu and President of JKF Goju Kai NZ, Shihan Patrick McGregor. So you know that our instructors are highly regarded and have earned their Dan grades.

There are only 3 clubs in New Zealand that are members of the Japan Karate-do Federation Goju Kai.

Jitsuei Kai - Chirstchurch (Honbu) Patrick McGregor Shihan 8th Dan

JKF Goju Kai Palmerston North     Lindsay Thomas Renshi 6th Dan

Karate Papamoa - Shi sei kan       Joseph McGregor Sensei 4th Dan

As well as being members of JKF Goju Kai we are also active members of Karate NZ, New Zealands governing body for Karate. Which means that we must always ensure that we are teaching our students with integrity and truthfully, our instructors are consantly seeking to improve their own skills and abilities and we strive to keep up-to-date with current coaching methods.

In 2013 Karate Papamoa ran the first High Performance programme for Karate in the Bay of Plenty, this programme designed in conjuction with a strenght and conditioning coach was very successful with all paticipants winning their divisions at Regional and Central North Island tournaments. Along with that success, 1 National Champion and 3 National medalists all in the same year.

Since then members of this programme including Joseph Sensei have repesented New Zealand and continue to perform with outstanding success.
